Welcome Prospective Students

I welcome enquiries from students wishing to undertake postgraduate research under my supervision at the University of York. I am glad to consider any serious application that meets the criteria outlined below.

Research Expertise

Our work focuses on population and genomic studies of human and animal pathogens. We have a primary emphasis on eukaryotic pathogens such as Leishmania and Plasmodium, though I am also very keen to supervise genomic studies on bacteria, fungi, or viruses.

Note that our lab seldom focuses on wet-lab work; genomic and computational data analysis is our main focus.

To get a clearer impression of our ongoing projects and methodologies, please view our research publications on Google Scholar.

Tuition Fees

International tuition fees for postgraduate research at the University of York are set directly by the university and cannot be adjusted by individual supervisors.

  • PhD Study: £32,030 per year (typically 3 to 4 years full-time).
  • MSc by Research: £30,950 total (typically 1 year full-time).

For up-to-date details on international tuition fees and funding options, please visit the University of York Postgraduate Research Fees page.

Fully funded scholarships

There are three PhD programmes in biological science at York that provide full scholarships, including these I list below. In each case, they are very competitive. Some (but not all) of these accept international students.

Entry Requirements

To apply, candidates should typically meet the following requirements:

  • Academic Qualifications: An upper second-class (2:1) or first-class bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, and/or a master’s degree.
  • Research Proposal: A proposal (typically around 1,500 words) that aligns closely with our group’s computational and genomic research focus.
  • References: Two strong academic references.
  • Interview: Successful performance in an interview with the supervisor and department panel.
  • English Language Proficiency: Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University of York’s standard postgraduate research English language requirements.
